What are the benefits of using Green Tea on your skin?

This morning when I woke up, I brushed my teeth, put on my morning toner, serums, cream, made some tea and then got ready for work. What if I told you that I not only drink my green tea but I wear it?! Sounds bizarre but it's one of the hottest ingredients in skincare!

Also known as Camellia Sinensis, it has been a tea for the centuries. It originated in ancient Asian culture and spread throughout the world. Green Tea is well known for all it's health benefits when consumed. Japanese monks would use this for mental clarity, to help improve their meditation and focus. It may be helpful for high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and fighting against cancer by improving DNA repair.

Green Tea's is actually known for its potent antioxidant levels especially of polyphenol. In short, its good for you and your skin. The lengthy explanation I'll explain further down below.

I’ll discuss some of the ways that green tea can be useful for your skin care, and what are some products that can contain green tea effectively for maximum benefit.

What are Antioxidants and Free Radicals?

Green Tea is filled with miconurtrients such as polyphenols, flavenoids, EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate), catechins, and a little piece of heaven we call CAFFEINE! These are all potent antioxidants that help rid the body of free radicals.

Free radicals are unstable molecules caused from stressors on the body and basic body functions. Some "stessors" on the body can be brought on by actual physical and mental stress, pollution, chemicals and the sun. Overtime an accumulation of these free radicals can lead to cell damage and increase risk of heart disease, Alzheimers Disease, Parkinson's Disease and cancer. As for the skin, it can cause pigmentation, wrinkles and signs of aging. Antioxidants help to reduce those free radicals on our body by preventing oxidation which then releases these radicals.

One of my favorite examples of this is when you cut an apple. Overtime if left out in the air for too long, it will slowly oxidize and turn brown. Free radicals are slowly releasing causing the apple to change pigment. Now what happens if you sprinkle a little orange juice or lemon juice ( this is packed with a potent antioxidant vitamin C) on top right after it's been cut? You got it! It prevents the apple from turning brown! Now let's replicate this example with green tea instead!

What are the benefits of using Green Tea on your skin?

A significant amount of wrinkles and skin cancers can be found with long periods of sun damage. Green tea's cancer fighting abilities can be seen not just with drinking this wonderful tea, but with applying it to your skin. It can improve DNA repair, from sun damage caused by harmful UV rays. This means it can also help fight signs of aging as well. Majority of these effects on skin can be seen with a potent antioxidant called EGCG.

Another amazing property is it anti-inflammatory properties! This is due to its high polyphenyl content. It's anti-inflammatory effect can lead to a decrease in swelling as well as redness on the skin due to Catachins . People who suffer from rosacea, inflammatory acne and puffy eye bags may find Green tea very useful in their skin care. Green tea also has some antibacterial properties. When it comes to treating acne prone skin, it may help to damage bacteria by damaging their membranes. This may help to reveal smoother and toned skin. Green tea is packed with vitamins such as vitamin B2 and vitamin E. Vitamin B2 plays a role in maintaining healthy collagen to maintain youthful firm skin. Vitamin E is known for its nourishing and hydrating properties for soft skin. It can also play a role in promoting new cell growth. Making this great for someone who is concerned with signs of aging. Another powerful antioxidant that might be within green tea is caffeine and tenants. These can help to shrink vessels, especially around the eyes helping to reduce puffiness.
