What are Free Radicals And How Can Antioxidants Help?

What are free radicals?

We face stress each and every day. Stress factors like, pollution, smoking, toxins, mental and physical stress all cause damage in our bodies when exposed to them. Even the air, rich in oxygen can slowly degrade products, we call this oxidation. When oxidation occurs, it creates free radicals. Our bodies fights this oxidation naturally through the use of antioxidants, which is found naturally in foods, dietary supplements, as well as skincare .

Free radicals are uncharged particles that roam throughout our bodies actually looking for an electron to pair with. Sort of like someone looking for a mate, but is a troublemaker. These free radicals if left unchecked can create havoc in our bodies. These free radicals have been linked to illnesses, accelerated aging and even cancer. Eating foods and even applying products rich in antioxidants can help neutralize these free radicals, minimizing the damage that they might cause.

What are Antioxidants?

Antioxidants and free radicals are both chemicals found naturally in the body. We also naturally create our own antioxidants. They are called endogenous antioxidants. We have an increased production of these antioxidants through metabolism. They help neutralize the free radicals. Although there are many different antioxidants in different foods they all basically do the same thing. However, too much of a certain antioxidant may actually be harmful to the body, such as copper or iron.

There are many foods that are packed with natural antioxidants such as:blueberries, strawberries, blackberries, red grapes, pomegranate, broccoli, walnuts, almonds, sweet potatoes, kale, beets, dark chocolate to name a few. It helps protect our DNA keeping it in a healthy state.

As we age the ability to fight toxins, pollution, effects of smoking, might not be at its optimum level. Antioxidants might just be that ammunition we need to help live a healthier life even as we age. If we live a healthy lifestyle, exercise, eat foods rich in antioxidants and minimize the stress we are expose to, then we help in armoring our bodies defense system. Your skin will thank you for it and so will your body.
