Thereby improving our lives and bringing us closer to the fountain of youth by improving our appearance. It can certainly boost self confidence not to mention how appealing we can appear. Studies are coming out everyday of an interesting fabric of protein called Peptides. Let's take a deeper dive into this and see how it is incorporated in our skin care products.
What are Peptides?
In basic terms, peptides are the building blocks that make up protein. When you link together amino acids, they form a chain called peptides. About 80% of our dermis (skin), are made up of Collagen peptides. The proteins that are commonly found in the skin are collagen, elastin and keratin. It helps to keep our skin looking smooth and firm. However, as we age we have a loss of collagen and its function.
There are several different types of peptides that provide certain benefit to different parts of your body like the eyes or cheeks. Peptides in skincare can produce and can provide significant anti-aging benefits. It also can assist in the management of wrinkles, and help reverse the signs of aging, as well as assist in the skin tone, elasticity and strength of your skin. This is quite a positive outcome for the field of Dermatology and with continued research it is getting better by the day.
What are some of the different types of Peptides and their functions?
Acetyl Tetrapeptide-5: This peptide is great for the skin primarily around the eyes. By affecting the circulation under the skin. Helping to reduce puffiness and swelling. Making this great for eye bags.
Pentapeptide-18 and Acetyl Hexapeptide 8: This peptide compound helps in the reduction of the appearance of wrinkles that are caused by facial expression. Some wrinkles especially around the cheeks and eye are brought on by the constant repetitive facial expressions that we all make. When muscles contract it pulls the skin with it causing the skin to fold. If the integrity of the skin has reduced due to loss of collagen then the skin will wrinkle and continue to have the wrinkle long after the expression was made.
Acetyl Hexapeptide-30: In combination with other Acetyl Hexapeptide molecules, this peptide has an additive effect, which is more powerful than using any of the amino-peptides alone.
For the most part, peptides take time to work. Except for neuropeptides that have some immediate effects. Peptides are best applied in serums or creams for a long period of time. You may start to see results in as early as 4 to 12 weeks. Upkeep is very important to bear in mind with peptides. If you’ve incorporated peptide in your daily routine, then you decide to stop, you will definitely notice the difference.
This is a very exciting time for skincare. Hundreds of peptides are being created in labs everyday. Just to know that there is something out there that can improve your skin tone, bringing a more healthy, youthful appearance to your skin, is worth doing some research on. So, get busy and proactive in a skin regime that includes peptides for your skin. Feed your skin, just like you would feed your body. Please keep in mind that your skin is the biggest organ in your body. Be good to yourself and keep those peptides in mind.
